As the Pan Pacific Hotel, where Rang Mahal is housed, was undergoing renovation, the restaurant was transferred to different premises. The layout was conceived as a great dining hall of old European mansions. To create an element of surprise, patrons first pass through a low foyer lit by the sensual red glow of the backlit glass wall. At its end, they are greeted by a grand double height room with a central row of banquette seating flanked with four-seater tables. The palette is kept to elegant off-whites and creams with contrasting dark accents of the black lacquer chair backs and the antique bronze accessories.
The adjoining private dining room epitomizes the concept with its long eighteen-seater communal table. The spatial grandeur is coupled with a slightly darker palette of taupes and warm greys, which, together with softer mood lighting, creates a formal yet comfortable setting.
Some previous design elements were kept but updated: the chandeliers, previously hung in separate locations, were joined in a striking row in the private dining room; the bronze artefacts, presented on silk-backed shelving bordered by screens, were used to punctuate the feature wall of the main hall, becoming its central focal point.

Preserving the last moment of the former St Anthony’s Convent (1879-1994), later occupied by the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1995-2004) and the Chinese Opera Institute (1995-2009) before its being revitalised by SCDA Architects whom was appointed in 2011 to develop and implement a design proposal for the centre.

Set within the premises of Holland Road Residence, the wine cellar was conceived as an intimate space for the enjoyment, display and storage of wine. Low mood lighting reveals the warm chocolate tones of walnut shelves, ceiling, and wall panelling, which are offset by the lightness of the striking split face limestone wall. The full-height shelving can accommodate both crates and loose bottles, and features a leather-clad display row where the finest wines can be showcased. The central island counter also provides crate storage, while its top – half marble, half clear glass – allows for wine presentation and tasting. Because of its rational design, the wine cellar can house over 2700 bottles.
Facing the storage area, a cosy lounge with armchairs in caramel leather upholstery completes the space. Here, chrome and pleated-leather accents add sparkle and texture to the low-lit interior, giving it the feel of a contemporary gentleman’s club.

This Leedon Residence show suite follows the development’s overall concept of an urban retreat. Designed to highlight the architectural space, the apartment strives to capture the overall tranquillity of the project, blurring the distinction between exterior and interior. The airy living and dining area takes full advantage of the double height space offered by the architecture, providing elegant surroundings for entertainment or relaxation. The bedrooms’ design puts emphasis on privacy, comfort, and individuality, showcasing the adaptability of the architectural space.
The residents’ wellbeing is prioritised through the selection of materials, finishes and furniture that seamlessly unite it with the development’s architecture and landscape. Far from enforcing a particular trend, every detail is carefully designed in order to create a cohesive, comfortable whole. From the custom door handles to the silk-backed shelving, the design is tailor-made for serene, effortless and elegant living.
The interior finishes are chosen to complement the architectural space and to preserve its inherent qualities. Playing with contrast and texture, the meticulously selected materials are combined so as to emphasise their essence: dark timber panels meet pearl raw silk cushions, hammered bronze is set off by the softness of a wool carpet, rough linen is juxtaposed with smooth leather. Possessing their own timeless elegance, the materials are harmoniously arranged to create a relaxed yet sophisticated environment of a true urban retreat.

The 1600 square-foot establishment, conceived by Soo Chan, Principal of SCDA, is a celebration of good food with quality design. The cooking is like Soo Chan's design manifesto; composed, refined, refreshing and amaranthine. The cooking techniques employed in Bistro Soori coupled with Chef Ashton Hall's clever interpretation is like a modern gastro-alchemy. Strategically located beneath SCDA Singapore as an extension of the firm's lifestyle arm to complement its multi-award winning practice, Bistro Soori is also a marketing tool for the luxurious resort, Alila Villas Soori Bali. Apart from welcoming diners in search for unique dining experiences, the restaurant offers intimate lessons for aspiring chefs. Taste subtle luxury.
